How PGB HK began…

I moved to Hong Kong in 2013 and was soon running at full speed - a busy work schedule, late nights at the office and regular short-notice business trips. In the midst of that, I found strength and centeredness in my practice of White Crane Silat, mindfulness meditation, and yoga.

White Crane Silat had been a constant in my life ever since I discovered it in 1994 back in Germany.

White Crane Silat had been a constant in my life ever since I discovered it in 1994 back in Germany. My teacher in those early days was Dietmar Lokatis (Loki), who is one of the highest ranked practitioners in PGB Europe and who had previously spent time in Indonesia studying directly with the founding Grandmaster Suhu Subur Rahardja.

In my early days, I used to run kids and teenager classes for my teacher and loved every minute of it. In the late 1990’s I also had the chance to meet Suhu Gunawan Rahardja, the current Grandmaster of PGB for the first time. I was immediately impressed by how smooth, effortless, yet powerful his movements were. This was another level of skill altogether. In the following years, I therefore made frequent trips to Bogor, Indonesia to train under Suhu Gunawan Rahardja at the PGB headquarters.

Life got busy and after many years of just keeping my own training alive in the background, I returned to Indonesia in 2018. There, I realized that if I wanted to improve my vitality, health and quality of life, I had to make changes. One of these - shifting towards a more wholesome nutrition is and always will be work in progress. The other was to move away from a ‘skill maintenance mindset’ to a genuine Personal Practice. Up to that point, I trained my Silat forms and was content that I could maintain performing certain skills.

I realized that if I wanted to improve my vitality, health and quality of life, I had to make changes.

A genuine Personal Practice is different. It’s about making a conscious decision to have a spiritual and physical practice at the very core of one’s life. A source of strength, grounding, and centeredness, from which to engage with the world. A way to keep the body strong, healthy, and flexible. A way to bridge the gap between the stillness of meditation and the often chaotic, fast moving environment.

It’s simple - investing just a little bit of time each day in the morning or at night, but doing so regularly and with intention.

With this realization, I became more committed to my Practice and the wish to share this and connect with like-minded people emerged. With the blessing and support of Suhu Gunawan Rahardja, I therefore set out together with my long time training partner and close friend Austin to start PGB HK in late 2018.

It is my wish for PGB HK to eventually grow into a core group of friends who thrive on creating a healthy and conscious lifestyle for themselves and who positively impact the communities around them.

Yours,

Flo
